State Highway SH1 Mercer
– Long Swamp Meremere Slip Repair
Owner: Transit New Zealand
Contractor: McConnell Dowell Ltd and Ross Reid Contractors Ltd
Design Consultant: Peters and Cheung Ltd
Completion: In progress
The 80m long road section, Meremere Slip, of the State Highway SH1 is located adjacent to the Waikato River. Historically, this stretch of road section has been subjected to continuous slip movement and settlement following high river water level events.
As part of the SH1 Mercer to Long Swamp Rea-alignment project, McConnell Dowell Ltd and Ross Reid Contractors Ltd has engaged Peters and Cheung Ltd as its design consultant to undertake stabilization design to improve the stability of the Meremere slip.
Our design adopted the use of 3m thick of light weight pumice sand to replace the original unstable ground in order to reduce the downslope driving force. The sand fill is reinforced by geogrid layers with extensive drainage to improve the ground stability for the new carriageway. The project is currently in-progress.
