Wilderness ViaductsOwner: Roads Department of Transport, South Africa
Duncan Peters designed 700m of viaducts on National Route 2 between the Kaaimans River and Wilderness. The inner half of the two lane highway is cut into the steep sided hill and the outer half is supported on bridgeworks. The deeply founded bridge piers are supported on 3m internal diameter reinforced concrete caissons which were excavated down to bed rock by top down construction and then tied in with rock anchors. The shallower piers comprise hammerhead columns on pad footings which were constructed in open excavations and tied into the bedrock with rock anchors. The deck comprises prestressed concrete I girders and a cast in-situ deck slab. |
